7. Narrative Description:
This is a two-story brick gable front commercial plan (21 feet by 65 feet, 1,365 square feet per
floor). Two single-story brick additions (total of 18 feet by 12 feet in width) are placed south of center
along the east side wall. A second-story enclosed porch incorporates a cast iron exterior stairway
along the back of the east side wall. It measures 32 feet in length by five feet in width. The rear wall is
unpainted and identifies the brick as a dark brown brick. There are two elongated Italianate style
windows on the north wall, both of which are now infilled by ventilation equipment or paneled shut
across the base. Two upper level windows have broad semi-circular brick arches. The larger windows
represent a northward extension of the building. Originally there was a second-story door and exterior
fire escape on the north endwall. There is an offset rear attic window and a brick in-wall chimney. The
roof is covered with older type hexagonal shingles. There are no outbuildings. The attic is floored and
there is a stair.
The storefront retains its original cast iron supports but the window areas have been infilled with
aluminum siding. Large brackets cap a cut corner and entryway. The building has a stone foundation.

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The Assessor dates this building to +/- 1870 but the 1891 Sanborn shows a different two-story
frame building, with an east side bay. The 1889 Perspective Map of the City of Dubuque shows this
same building present. This building was present by 1909 so dates to 1892-1908. It and its
predecessor, were used as a drugstore. The address as of 1891 was 109 Rhomberg, that by 1909
was 501 Rhomberg. Later maps identify its continued use as a drug store. This building was
historically associated with the residence to the east (503 Rhomberg) a 1.5-story brick cottage. A
westward extension of the rear addition or porch linked to the outbuilding behing this building.
