Narrative Description: This is a two-story frame gable front commercial plan. There is a full basement (six feet high ceiling) while the ground floor has a nine-feet high ceiling. There is a two-bedroom apartment upstairs. Stone foundation, aluminum siding exterior. The original two-story core pre-dates 1891. By 1909 the building had been enlarged to the south and had a two-story west side porch in the southwest corner. By this time there was a single-story plumbing shop at the back of the lot on the alley. By 1936 this outbuilding had been linked to the main building by the construction of a garage. The core building measures 20 feet in width and 46 feet in depth and there is a one foot by 13 feet east bay with a three feet square corner porch along the east side wall. The garage addition measures 23 feet in width and 16 feet in depth (there is a 15 feet by 8 feet porch or separate unit in the northeast corner. The rearmost addition measures 23 feet in width and 16 feet in depth. The ground floor is a single commercial room while the second floor contains four rooms. The current building appears to have a replacement rear addition, built as a single unit with shed roof, vertical siding or paneling, so the premise that an earlier shop is incorporated is incorrect. The building has been resided. A wooden stair leads from the west side entrance to the roof of the garage and a fenced patio surrounds a single- story rear building, likely an enclosed porch. Fenestration appears to be minimal on the east side and there are just three upper-level windows on the west side. A paired window set is centered above the storefront display window and there is a cut-corner entrance to the commercial space. Beginning in 1909, an exterior stairway is depicted along the north end of the east sidewall. Narrative Statement of Significance: The Assessor dates this building to +/- 1898 and the 1891 Sanborn map shows a two-story rectangular frame saloon building, addressed as 110 Rhomberg Avenue. The 1889 bird's eye view appears to show the alleyway shop in place. The 1909 building depicted on the Sanborn Maps could be an all-new building but more likely is an enlargement of the original smaller building. It first appears in city directories in 1899-1900 as #502 Rhomberg (this might be due to a street name change however).
