Dubuque Hosting Army Garrison Commander
DUBUQUE, Iowa Dubuque is one of just five cities selected to host a U.S. Army
garrison commander as part of a new U.S. Department of Defense initiative.
The City of Dubuque, in partnership with the International City/County Managers
Association (ICMA) and the U.S. Army, is hosting Lieutenant Colonel Greg Ank this
week as part of a new professional fellowship between ICMA and the U.S. Army
Installation Management Command.
Army and other military bases often function very similar to small and mid-sized cities
and provide services that would be familiar to any city or county manager. The goal of
the professional fellowship partnership is to enhance a garrison s pre-
assignment training and to provide them with an ongoing professional association home
for education, knowledge resources, and networking.
Ank began his fellowship in Dubuque on Monday and will stay through Friday, April 24.
He has been in the Army for nearly 18 years, with most of the time in positions with the
Army in the military intelligence field supporting troops that operate on the ground, as
well as decision makers as part of a larger operational to strategic staff. Ank is currently
assigned at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, but will be taking garrison command of Carlisle
Barracks, Pa.
During his time in Dubuque, Ank is attending meetings with City Manager Mike Van
Milligen and other city staff as well as meeting with key city partners to learn more about
city services and management practices.
