0 42 percent of the fiscal year has lapsed and 43 percent of the budget has been
expended. 47 percent of the projected revenue has been received.
o Overall Internet access was up 4 percent. Telemessenger, the automated calling
system that notifies patrons of reserves that are in, or overdue materials, has
begun picking up long distance calls. Eleven calls last month were made for a
cost of $.47. The cost to send out mailers would have been $17.71.
Telemessenger is very cost effective!
o Grover, from Sesame Street, was invited by Gray Dale to visit the Library while
performing at the Five Flags Center. He stopped in with a friend who read to 107
attendees. Over 300 people attended the event featuring children's author
Christopher Paul Curtis.
o The last phase of the Art Audit has been completed with bronzes, sculptures and
clocks valued at between $70 and $100,000. Total value of library-owned art is
estimated to be around $1,350,000. This does not include the Grant Wood
paintings Appraisal and Victorian Survival. The next step in the audit is to review
insurance coverage and identify aclimate-controlled secure storage facility for all
items of value while the Library is under construction.
o The Library Board approved an updated agreement with the Dubuque Museum of
Art for the loan of Library-owned art works. The two paintings by Grant Wood,
Appraisal and Victorian Survival will be loaned for a period of 25 years. The
agreement stipulates that it can be terminated with sixty days notice in either of
the following events: 1) The Library experiences a financial crisis that interferes
with its ability to provide an appropriate level of service to the community; or 2)
Any circumstances arise that jeopardize the security or maintenance of the loaned
items. All other terms and conditions of the original agreement remain
unchanged which is a termination by either party with a 60-day written notice to
recall, or send back, all other library-owned works of art housed at the museum.
The Board of the Dubuque Museum of Art has already approved this with a
unanimous vote.
o The Library Board approved an update to the Internet policy to include the words:
"and to block access to inappropriate sites." to a sentence that reads: "The library
reserves the right to ban patrons from using Internet computers, desktop or laptop,
who violate this policy. "
o The Library Board will review a gift policy as it relates to donations to the
Campaign at their next board meeting.
o Contributions have been strong to the capital campaign, particularly in the past
two weeks. With so many requests out there it is difficult to predict how and
when a contribution will arrive, but there is confidence we can meet our target
date of construction by March 30. With this in mind, the Board approved asking
City Engineering to submit the first resolution to the City Council at their meeting
of January 21 so that we can begin the process ending in construction.
