Proclamaiton_Martin Luther King Day Proclamation 1 20 08
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on Sunday, January 20, 2008, our community will celebrate the
birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., beginning with a gathering at
Jackson Park at 1:00 p.m. and a march to Prescott Elementary
School to witness the awards in the annual NAACP Tribute Contest;
and

WHEREAS, on Monday, January 21, the 16 Annual Martin Luther King, Jr.
Birthday Breakfast will be held at the Grand River Center at 7:30
a.m. with Bishop Leonard Scott, as the keynote speaker, addressing
Dr. King’s message as it relates to poverty today; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King said, “Ultimately, a great nation is a compassionate nation.
No individual or nation can be great if it does not have a concern for
‘the least of these.’”
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA,
ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM JANUARY 20 and 21, 2008, AS
DAYS OF GREAT CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
AND URGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN IN KEEPING HIS DREAM ALIVE BY
JOINING IN THE CELEBRATIONS AND WORKING TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE
AND COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY HERE IN DUBUQUE.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have
