4 7 08 Celebration of Green Proclamation PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Earth Day has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1970 to challenge citizens to experience the beauty of nature and become better "Stewards of the Environment." and WHEREAS, the planet's water, air, and land resources have still continued to become even more depleted and polluted. Global climate change is now threatening the quality of life for future generations. People in global poverty will suffer more than other world citizens from this misuse; and WHEREAS, Earth Day is a seasonal opportunity to reinvigorate our Dubuque community to act to create a higher quality of life for all our citizens and other living beings; and WHEREAS, adults and youth in Dubuque and throughout the world are joining together to help build more sustainable communities; and WHEREAS, religious leaders, locally and world-wide, call upon people of faith to live more simple and sustainable lifestyles. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DECLARE AN OBSERVATION OF EARTH WEEK DURING APRIL 14-22, 2008, AS A TIME OF REFLECTION AND ACTION REGARDING THE STEWARDSHIP OF OUR PLANETARY HOME AND ENCOURAGE THE LOCAL SUPPORT OF BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS TO CREATE A "SUSTAINABLE DUBUQUE" COMMUNITY. I ENCOURAGE CITIZENS OF ALL SPIRITUALITIES TO ATTEND "A CELEBRATION OF - AN EVENING OF PRAYERFUL APPRECIATION, SONG, CREATION: GROWING GREEN" PRESENTATIONS OF PRACTICAL ENVIRONMENTAL TIPS, INFORMATION AND DISCUSSION. THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE AT RESURRECTION CHURCH ON APRIL 14, AND WILL BE REPEATED AT ST. RAPHAEL'S CATHEDRAL ON EARTH DAY, APRIL 22, IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of th Dubuque to be affixed this 7 day of April, 2008. ________________________________ Roy D.
