Dear City Council Members,
We are greatly encouraged with all the efforts the City of Dubuque has put forth to
becoming increasingly sustainable and "earth friendly." We are heartened by and very
supportive of the Green City Task Force that is working to develop a strategic plan to
achieve a green designation.
Our hope is that this plan is based on universal principles and in harmony and association
with work being done in numerous communities all over the world. To this end we
would ask you, the Dubuque City Council, to adopt the goals of the Earth Charter as the
framework for the development of the Dubuque strategic plan.
The Earth Charter gives us the fundamental principles on which to build a just,
sustainable, and peaceful global society. It promotes broad rather than narrow interests.
It is comprehensive and endorsed by thousands of organizations and institutions.
To endorse and proclaim the Earth Charter as the foundation of our work for a
sustainable future would mark us as members of a global community and place us among
the leaders in action to maintain and enhance our world as a gift for future generations.
Please consider seriously this request.
Sincerely,
Sister Rita Goedken
Sister Dorothy Heidershceit
Sister Kathleen Grace
Sister Virginia Jennings
