Beeler_Brietbach Tree Farm Sponsor Tree ProgramTO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members FROM: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Beeler Tree Farm and Breitbach Tree Farm Offer DATE: April 30, 2008 Leisure Services Manager Gil Spence is recommending that the City accept an offer made to Mayor Roy Buol from Beeler Tree Farm and Breitbach Tree Farm to purchase specially priced 4-inch diameter trees, 16 to 25 feet tall, for planting in parks and other properties maintained by the City. These trees would normally sell for $600 planted, but the City can purchase them under this offer for $250 each, installed. The City does not have a budget for this item, so Gil is recommending approval of a "Sponsor Tree Planting Program" for these trees. Gil has identified the need for 119 trees in various areas around the City. The sponsorship program would allow service clubs, companies or individuals to adopt a site and pay the cost of the tree planting for that site. This program would be aimed at planting these trees in the fall of 2008. I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council approval. ~~ ~~ V Michael C. Van Milligen MCVM/jh Attachment cc: Barry Lindahl, City Attorney Cindy Steinhauser, Assistant City Manager Gil D. Spence, Leisure Services Manager TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Gil D. Spence, Leisure Services Manager SUBJECT: Beeler Tree Farm and Breitbach Tree Farm Offer DATE: April 29, 2008 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to approve a "Sponsor Tree Planting Program" for trees from the Beeler Tree Farm and Breitbach Tree Farm. DISCUSSION John Schmitt of Beeler Tree Farm has written the City offering a special price on 4-inch diameter trees, 16 to 25 feet tall for planting in parks and other properties maintained by the City. These trees would normally sell for $600 planted but we can purchase them for $250 each, installed. Beeler Tree Farm from Hazel Green and Breitbach Tree Farm have joined to make this offer. Areas that could take advantage of this offer include: area number of trees • Welu Park 4 • Hillcrest Park 6 • Teddy Bear Park 3 • Sothern Park 4 • Bergfeld Recreation Area 12 • Dubuque Technology Park 12 • Gay Park 6 • Usha Park 10 • Valentine Park 6 • Pinard Park 2 • Burden Park 4 • Highway 20 50 Total 119 continued page two These 119 trees would cost $29,750. We do not have any funds budgeted for this so I would like to develop a sponsorship program that would allow service clubs, companies, or individuals to adopt a site and pay the cost of the tree planting. This program would be aimed at planting in the fall of 2008. ACTION STEP The action requested is that the City council accept the offer from Beeler Tree Farm and Breitbach Tree Farm and approve the tree planting sponsorship program.
