5 19 08 Mike Connolly Proclamation
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Iowa State Senator Mike Connolly is retiring from his position in the Iowa General
Assembly after thirty years of service to the City of Dubuque and the State of Iowa; and
WHEREAS, Senator Connolly was responsible for providing the leadership that secured the first
public funding for the riverfront redevelopment known as America’s River and ensured
the establishment of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium; and
WHEREAS, Senator Connolly led the effort reformulate the Road Use Tax Fund in the late 1980’s,
which resulted in the construction of the three, four-lane highway connectors to the city
of Dubuque providing for economic development and growth of the Tri-State area; and
WHEREAS, Senator Connolly has been a tireless advocate for education throughout his career in
public office; and, until the end, fought for and secured statewide funding to provide for
infrastructure improvements for Iowa schools in order to maintain Iowa’s quality
educational system; and
WHEREAS, the Senator has led the effort with Governor Vilsack to establish such legacy programs
as Vision Iowa and the Community Attraction and Tourism Development Fund, and his
peers and colleagues have recognized his unmatched championship of arts and culture
in the State of Iowa.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE

CITY COUNCIL, STAFF, AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE 19 DAY OF MAY,
2008, AS
“STATE SENATOR MIKE CONNOLLY DAY”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, IN CELEBRATION OF SENATOR CONNOLLY’S DEDICATION TO
SERVING THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND THE STATE OF IOWA AND TO PROVIDING
FOR THE RESTORATION OF OUR PEOPLE TO THE RIVERFRONT, RESTORING COMMERCE AND
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO OUR COMMUNITY, PRESERVING AND PROVIDING
FOR THE FUTURE OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION IN THE STATE OF IOWA, AND FOR
UNDERSTANDING AND ELEVATING THE ROLE OF ARTS AND CULTURE IN THE DAILY LIVES OF OUR
CITIZENS.
