Staff present: Gil Spence, Bob Fritsch, Pat Prevenas and Eileen Trimble
MINUTES It was moved by Blocklinger, seconded by Duggan, to approve the minutes of
APPROVED; the May 13, 2008, meeting. The motion passed unanimously.

REQUEST TO The department received a petition generated by Patti Schiesl, 3099 Kane Court,
ALTERNATE to requesting that the department alternate which pool closes early at the end of
EARLY CLOSING the season so that Sutton could stay open longer every other year. Leisure
OF THE Services Manager Gil Spence explained that because we lose a lot of staff
OUTDOOR returning to school in early to mid August; Sutton has always been the one to
POOLS; VOTE: close early because Flora is larger, more centrally located and could serve more
public, especially if it was really hot in August.
It was moved ~ Duggan, seconded k~ Hariehausen, to receive and file the
etition from Patti Schiesl, and concurs with staff recommendation to continue
closing Sutton Pool first in Au ust. The motion ap ssed unanimously.
"NO SMOKING" Leisure Services Manager Gil Spence explained some of the conditions of the
BAN": Iowa Smoke Free Act that has been passed by state legislators and goes into
effect July 1st. The rules have not been totally finalized, but we know the
following for sure: • cannot smoke in public buildings and grounds around it; •
at Bunker Hill you will not be able to smoke in the building, porch or patio, but
okay in parking lot or on the course; • no smoking at McAleece sports complex;
• no smoking in any building in the parks, including open air pavilions; • signs
will need to be posted at all facilities.
UPDATE ON • Bids for trees at Heron Pond are in and trees should be here in the fall; a
C.I.P. PROJECTS: second bid for shrubs for the area had to be sent out. • Mr. Spence said he was
asked to list FY 2009 CIP projects that were not an emergency that could
possibly be delayed because the City needs two million dollars for limestone wall
repair. • Welu Park development will begin soon. • Town Clock renovation
continues.
PARK Park Division Manager Bob Fritsch informed commissioners:

REPORT: • River is rising and electrical connections had to be removed from campsites
again at Miller Riverview Park Monday; six firemen in boats helped with this
project. We will take a big hit on revenue with the park being flooded and may
not even be able to use the park for July 4th holiday. • Tree crew busy with
storm calls. • Staff was two weeks late in completing flower planting due
weather; roses are blooming and weeding is being done. • Civil Service test for
Assistant City Gardener job is June 16th; four to six weeks before hiring
complete. • Clydesdales are in for America's River Festival and they will be at
Eagle Point Park from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday for the public to see.

RECREATION Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas informed commissioners:
DIVISION .Summer programs started Monday; boys' baseball and girls' softball programs

were held in the parking lot at Vet's instead of on the fields because they were
so wet. • Numbers for tennis, baseball and softball and all up; pool numbers are
down. • All the rain is changing the chemical balance at the pools and we have
had to use more chemicals to get things balanced. • Golf rounds are down 22%
from last year; course was closed Sunday and Monday. • Adult softball hasn't
been hit by cancellations too badly; baseball games at Petrakis Field have been
canceled quite a bit.
