Minutes Park and Recration 7 8 08PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING Tuesday, July 8, 2008 4:30 p.m., Snack Bar, Bunker Hill Golf Course PRESENT: Tom Blocklinger, Chuck Duggan, Paul Hoffmann, Karen Lyness, Evelyn Nadeau and Mark Noble OTHERS: Staff present: Gil Spence, Bob Fritsch, Pat Prevenas and Jolene Rettenberger MINUTES It was moved by Tom Blocklinger, seconded by Karen Lyness, to approve the APPROVED; minutes of the June 10, 2008 meeting. The motion passed unanimously. We VOTE: welcome our new commissioner, Mark Noble. ELECT It was moved ~ Evelyn Nadeau, seconded ~ Karen Lyness, to elect Karen OFFICERS; Lyness, Chair; Tom Blocklinger, Vice-Chair; and Chuck Duggan, Secretary for VOTE: 2008-2009. The motion ap ssed unanimously. UPDATE ON Mr. Spence informed commissioners: C.I.P. PROJECTS: • Town Clock repairs are continuing. • Welu Park development will begin this fall. • The City of Dubuque Tree Sponsorship Program fliers have arrived. To date, we have a list with seventeen (17) people who are interested in sponsoring a tree. Due to increased tree sponsorship, no more names will be taken for planting at Burden Park. Citizen cost is $250 per tree. PARK DIVISION Park Division Manager Bob Fritsch updated commissioners: REPORT: • Miller-Riverview Park is still closed. A meeting is scheduled with a representative from FEMA on the removal of 6" of mud inside the campground. Work needs to be done to repair the road, and we will need to reseed the entire campground. We will also be meeting with Drew Cook on the cleanup of the campground. • We are in the midst of interviewing eight (8) candidates for the position of Assistant Gardener. This position will target the high profile areas such as Port of Dubuque, Locust Street, City Hall, Washington Park, island areas, Community Health Center and the Multi-Cultural Center. We will have designs for our parks with new plant lists coming out each spring. RECREATION Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas updated commissioners: DIVISION REPORT: • Bunker Hill Golf Course golf rounds for the month of June are down 10% from last year and total rounds are 17% down from last year. Golf rounds for the July 4th holiday weekend were well attended. • We are currently working on painting the trim at the Bunker Hill Golf Course Clubhouse. • Shrubs have been removed along tee #4 at Bunker Hill Golf Course and will be replaced with plants/flowers such as royal purple Smoke bushes/dwarf burning bushes, purple flowers and lilies. • Pool attendance numbers compare to the year 1993 -need warmer weather. • Flora and Sutton water playgrounds are using an Ultraviolet Light Disinfection System as part of the pool recirculation system which kills the crypto parasites. • Due to the weather, some of our City-wide Special Events have been canceled. The kids' fishing clinic and derby is continued July 8, 2008 meeting page two rescheduled for Saturday, July 12th at the Bergfeld Recreation Area, not Miller Riverview Park due to flooding. • The City of Dubuque, in cooperation with The Boys and Girls Club, is offering a Free Summer Lunch Program at three (3) playground sites: Comiskey Park (averaging 36 lunches), Lincoln School (averaging 14 lunches) and Prescott School (averaging 19 lunches). This program is for girls and boys ages 8 through 14, where our trained leaders plan, organize and direct the activities every Monday through Friday, June 9th through August 1st. OTHER • No date has been established for the location of our new Pet Park. Waiting BUSINESS: on a decision from EPA. • Karen Lyness questioned the usage policies regarding the use of liquor at the Alliant Energy Amphitheater.
