I have served on that board several years ago and was retired after two terms because of the then golicyto reappoint new people after two terms. I served also as the designated libraryboardmember for ~e Lull Art Fund, and acquired four significant pictures by a celebrated Iowa artist for the library. I have also served on the Dubuque Museum of Art and vvas made an honorary member of that board when I retired, I am also a practicing attorney. It is evident from a recent report in the Telegraph Herald that there is a problem with the ark which the Library holds in trust. Two ofthe Herald pictures were held for some time in the Librarybasearnent and were dama~,ed, sufficiently so that one was to be consigned to the dumpster. FQrttuiately it was examined by an expert and sold for $350,000, all according to the TH report. 'Phis, iftrue, evidences less than optimum care and. judgment by the Library Board. I~Tot ~anIy the Libraty Board but the City Council is charged with the responsibility for the art owned by the Library and I am sure that the same story which I read also concerned the City Council, since it appoints the Library Board members. Where needs to be a current inventory ofthe Library's art done, current appraisals ofits value obtained as well as assurances bygrofessionals that it is properly stored, insured and secured. I know that many ofthe paintings were gifts and it must be determined that the conditions of the gifts ate met. I believe that I can be of service to the community and t1-ierefore make this request for this appointment. I know ~-f no conflicts and wi11 be happy to serve, if appointed.
