8 4 08 Resp Gaming Week Proclamation
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the gaming entertainment industry is an important part of our community,
improving our overall economy and quality of life by employing more than
850 people and paying more than $26 million in payroll and benefits in
2007, distributing more than $1.8 million to local charities and
organizations, and more than $25 million in taxes annually; and
WHEREAS, the overwhelming majority of casino customers enjoy gaming for its
entertainmentand recreational value and do so responsibly; however
WHEREAS, the commercial casino entertainment industry has devoted significant
effort and resources to the promotion and practice of responsible gaming,
including establishing the National Center for Responsible Gaming to fund
research into disordered gambling and youth gambling and funding 1-800-
BETS-OFF; and
WHEREAS, the commercial entertainment industry has designated August 4-8, 2008, as
Responsible Gaming Education Week in order to raise awareness of this
important issue.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF AUGUST 4-8, 2008, AS:
“RESPONSIBLE GAMING EDUCATION WEEK”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN ME IN
EXPRESSING GREAT APPRECIATION TO DUBUQUE GREYHOUND PARK AND CASINO,
AND THE DIAMOND JO CASINO FOR SERVING AS AN ANCHOR FOR LOCAL TOURISM
EFFORTS, MAKING SUBSTANTIAL CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRI-STATE
AREA, AND HELPING TO LESSON THE BURDEN OF CITY GOVERNMENT BY
PROVIDING ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE.
