SUBJECT: PEG Fund Request

Cable TV Coordinator Craig Nowack is recommending approval of the Cable TV
Commission recommendation for funding from the Public, Educational, and Government
(PEG) Capital Grant for Access Equipment and Facilities in the amount of $55,000 for
the City of Dubuque to purchase 54 TB of storage for media files as part of a City-wide
storage solution. This will replace Cable TV's existing storage servers which are
approaching six years old and are having performance issues due to system
degradation.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

RE: PEG Fund Request
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to forward a recommendation from the Cable TV
Commission for a request for funding from the Capital Grant for Access Equipment and
Facilities.
BACKGROUND
At its meeting on February 1, 2017, the Cable TV Commission approved a request from the City
of Dubuque for$55,000 to purchase 54 TB of storage for media files as part of a City-wide
storage solution. This request will replace Cable TV's existing storage servers which are
approaching six years old and which are having performance issues due to system degradation.
The Capital Grant for Access Equipment and Facilities currently has a balance to be awarded
for$605,706.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
I respectfully request that the Commission's recommendation for this request be forwarded to
the City Council to receive, file, and approve. Thank you.

Provide a general description of what you are requesting and why::This request replaces the existing Cable TV storage
servers with a storage solution that is part of an overall organizational storage strategy designed to meet current
requirements while anticipating future needs. This new solution will replace our existing servers which are approaching
six years old and which are exhibiting performance degradation.
Describe how the community will benefit from your request:: Since the Cable TV Division first went digital in 2006, we
have amassed a tremendous amount of video through innumerable video shoots and digitizing archived videotapes from
the past. Access to this digitized material has enabled us to produce many programs to present to local residents via our
cable channel and website. Since we shoot very little videotape anymore, in order to archive digital files we must have
large file storage available. This request provides that storage.
