From the Meering ofJanuary 26, 2017
Present: Jenny Weiss, President; Patty Poggemiller, Vice President, Secretary;
and Trustees, Robert Armstrong, Pat Maddux, Christy Monk, Jon Trotter, and

• Fifty percent of the fiscal year lapsed at the end of December.
Expenditures were at 48% of the budget, and revenue collected was at
57% of projections.
• Ten of the 17 databases experienced an increase in use during the
second quarter of FY 2017 compared to FY 2016 and the increases were
significant. Access to digital eBooks and eAudio continues to grow and
has increased 30% compared to FY 2016.
• A survey seeking input into a City-County library partnership was launched
on the library's website and the website of the Dubuque County Library
District. Hard copies are also available in the libraries. The survey asks
those using the libraries if they wish to see expanded service through the
drop off and pick up of materials from one library's collection to the other
library. The survey is available through February 28.
• The Grand Opening of the Maker Space on Saturday, January 21 was
successful with 970 visitors that day.
• The Board approved ideas to present to the Library Foundation and the
Friends of the Library for grant proposals to the DRA. These ideas include:
o Kindle Fires— proposal to have preloaded eBooks on these to take
them to nursing homes or residential care facilities.
o Support for parenting classes that will focus on parents as active
partners in their child's early literacy development.
o Mobile Bicycle Library — a library on two-three wheels can be
featured in targeted areas like the Farmers' Market, Dubuque Fest,
Taste of Dubuque, downtown during lunch hour and many more. A
hot spot will allow for the sign up of library cards on the spot and
check out of materials.
o Playaways and Launch Pads — Playaways are digital audio books
in one small self-contained unit. These devices are more portable
than books on CD. Launch Pads are pre-loaded tablet-like devices
with fun and educational learning apps for children. Apps are
grouped by subject area, grade level, theme, and age.
• The Board approved expenditures for the past month.
• The Board reviewed the updated Plan of Service for 2016 and approved
the Plan of Service for 2017 (a copy is attached).
• The Board approved the FY 2018 budget presentation to the City Council,
which is scheduled for February 13 at 6:00 p.m.
