SUBJECT: Imagine Dubuque City Council Presentation
DATE: February 13, 2017
Introduction:
This memorandum forwards the Imagine Dubuque presentation that is scheduled for the
February 20th City Council meeting.
Background:
This is the second of four scheduled City Council presentations. A third update is scheduled
for June 26th and the Draft plan is scheduled to be presented at the August 28th City Council
Meeting. Plan adoption is scheduled for the October 16th meeting.
Discussion:
We are doing very well with public engagement and I believe the presentation illustrates the
degree and depth of those efforts. Inclusive, varied, and tailored community engagement
strategies has resulted in over 2,500 ideas on how Dubuque can become a more viable,
livable and equitable community. Data received to data is showing our input is reflective of
the community as illustrated in slide 9. Planning Services Staff is developing strategies to
better engage residents 65 and older. More community engagement events are planned
through June of 2017.
The presentation will provide an overview of outreach efforts, accomplishments, and future
events. The presentation will introduce themes that have emerged to date, noting more will
develop as the project continues. The themes represent common and often heard ideas and
values shared by residents throughout the Imagine Dubuque project. The themes identified
to date include:
1. Further Sustainability
2. Respect, Compassion and Inclusivity
3. Focus on Needs of Low Income Residents
4. Attract and Retain Young Professionals
5. More Activities for Teens and Families
6. Build a Recreation/Health and Wellness Center
7. Enhance Mobility
8. Further Complete Streets and Trails
9. Capitalize on the Southwest Arterial
10. Housing Diversity, Affordability and Mixed-Use
11. More Restaurant and Retail Diversity
12. Expand Entrepreneurship
Recommendation:
Planning Services Staff is confident the project has thus far met and exceeded community
engagement expectations. The Long Range Planning Advisory Commission is scheduled to
review the emerging themes at their February 15th meeting.
Requested Action:
Planning Services Staff respectfully requests City Council review the information.
