WHEREAS, May 20, 2017 is the Seventh Annual National Kids to Parks Day organized
and launched by the National Park Trust; and
WHEREAS, National Kids to Parks Day empowers kids and encourages families to get
outdoors and visit America's parks; and
WHEREAS, Children today spend less time outdoors than any other generation,
devoting only four to seven minutes to unstructured outdoor play per day
while spending an average of seven and one-half hours in front of electronic
media; and
WHEREAS, The CDC reports that childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years, that
less than 25% of adults engage in recommended levels of physical activity
and that obesity is the leading cause of chronic disease; and
WHEREAS, National Kids to Parks Day is open to all children and adults across the
country to encourage a large and diverse group of participants; and
WHEREAS, Physical activity is a key to good health and increased use of parks and
green spaces is essential to health and wellness of children and adults; and
WHEREAS, it is important to introduce a new generation to our parks, which will broaden
children's appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE 20TH DAY OF MAY, 2017 AS
"KIDS TO PARKS DAY))
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, URGE RESIDENTS TO MAKE TIME ON MAY 20 TO
TAKE THE CHILDREN IN THEIR LIVES TO A NEIGHBORHOOD, STATE OR NATIONAL
PARK.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set
my hand and caused the Great Seal of the City
