Library Board of Trustees Update

Present: Vice President Patty Poggemiller; Mike Willis, Secretary; and Trustees,
Robert Armstrong, Christy Monk, Pat Maddux, and Jon Trotter

• March marked 75% of the fiscal year lapsing. Expenditures were at 71%
and revenue received was at 72 % of projections. The Board of Trustees
approved the Library's expenditures during the past month.
• March was a busy month. The number of checkouts was stable and many
areas experienced an increase in use. Notably, the number of new library
cards issued increased by nearly two every day, for a total of 2,302 new
accounts opened during the month of March.
• Although total circulations year-to-date is down, those to Dubuque
residents increased in March compared to March of last year. eBooks and
eAudio grew 26% compared to March of 2016, and year-to-date the
increase in this format was 29%. Database access increased in use
across eight different resources.
• A review of the Library's web site shows that the most visited pages were
the digital collection, followed by the Telegraph Herald archives (743 visits
in March), Tutor.com, Adult Services, and movies.
• A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Carnegie-Stout Public
Library and the Dubuque County Library District was reviewed by Barry
Lindahl in City Legal Services, and Ralph Potter, County Attorney. No
changes were recommended. The Board approved the MOU and staff will
begin working on implementation of this new program to expand library
services.
• In keeping with Iowa Code, the Library Board reviewed the Patron
Behavior Policy and voted to delete the sentence that stated the building
is a gun-free zone.
• The Board discussed options to support a position dedicated to general
marketing—everything from graphic design to social media. Henricks will
provide a sample job description, a plan with goals and objectives, and
additional information for the May Board meeting.
