RE: Heritage Trail
Dear Brian,
The City of Dubuque is pleased to offer our support for the Dubuque County
Conservation Board's application for a Transportation Alternatives Program Grant—
Regional Planning Affiliation #8 in the amount of $250,000.00. This grant money will be
combined with local funds to replace Bridge #21 on the Heritage Trail..
The Dubuque County Heritage Trail offers a safe and accessible route through
picturesque open space corridors, with scenic views of woodlands, farmland and
limestone bluffs. It provides links to open space amenities along its 26-mile length and
at its termini. It is a valuable recreational and tourism resource for the tri-state area. Re-
establishing its continuity with the replacement of these is vital.
The 2012 City of Dubuque Comprehensive Plan contains goals and objectives for
maintaining existing bike/hike trails and creating a comprehensive bicycle and
pedestrian network throughout the community. The Dubuque County Heritage Trail is
an important connection for the City to accomplish these goals and objectives. This
project will safely re-connect the 30-mile Heritage Trail between the Cities of Dyersville
and Dubuque.
Sincerely,
Michael C. Van Milligen

The Dubuque County Conservation Board is applying fora Transportation Alternatives Program
Grant—Regional Planning AfCrliation b8 in the mount of$250,000.00. This grant money will
be combined with local funds to replace Bridge b21 on the Heritage Trail.
This bridge was originally built by the Chicago Great Western Railway Company in the late
1800'x. When this company went out of business, the old rail line running from to Dubuque to
Dyersville was converted into a ninth use recreational trail by a group of Dubuque County trail
enthusiasts. If 1986 the Dubuque County Conservation Board gained possession of the Heritage
Trail
Heritage Trail is a great example of a ninth purpose recreational area as it provides outdoor
enthusiasts the opportunity to hike, bike, cross country ski, snowmobile geocache and view
wildlife It also offers the perfect location for various fundraising events. With over135,000
visitors annually, the Heritage Trail provides positive economic benefits to the local
communities.
The Dubuque County Conservation Board is asking for letters of support from your community
or organization in this important endeavor to keep the Heritage Trail a safe outdoor recreation
destination.
I apologize for the short notice and thank you in advance for your participation. Please email
your letters of support to brim brestonadubuauecounty us no laterthan Thursday, July 6, 2017.
