Van Milligen, City Manager From: Jerelyn O'Connor, Neighborhood Development Specialist Subject: Housing Commission's Recommendation to name the Housing Conference Room after Ann O'Hara Michalski Date: August 14, 2017 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to transmit to City Council a recommendation from the City of Dubuque Housing Advisory Commission to name the Housing and Community Development Department Conference Room after Ann O'Hara Michalski. BACKGROUND The Housing Commission has been discussing their desire to establish a memorial for Ann Michalski. Ann Michalski was a long serving member of both the Dubuque Housing Commission and the Community Development Advisory Commission. Housing and Community Development Director Alvin Nash discussed a number of options with the Housing Commission. Mr. Nash asked me to provide staff support to a committee of Housing Commission members to finalize a recommendation to name the Housing and Community Development Department Conference room after Ann Michalski. DISCUSSION A committee of housing commission members was formed to finalize details for naming the Conference Room after Ann Michalski. Committee members included Commission Chair Rick Baumhover, Commissioner Sr. Dorothy Schwendinger, and Jerelyn O'Connor, Neighborhood Development Specialist. Commission Chair Rick Baumhover also serves as the Housing Commission representative on the Community Development Advisory Commission. Both the Housing Commission and the Community Development Advisory Commission approve naming the Conference Room after Ann Michalski. The Committee members finalized the design and wording of a metal photo relief plaque to be placed in the Conference Room and reviewed the proposed design with the Michalski family. The Commission voted unanimously to recommend to City Council that the Housing and Community Development Conference Room be named the Ann Michalski Conference Room. The Commission believes that this is an appropriate manner to honor Ann's contributions and service to the Dubuque community. This discussion was prompted due to Ann's long time service as a member of both the Housing Commission and Community Development Advisory Commission. Due to her service and her fierce advocacy for affordable housing and our community's neighborhoods, the Housing Commission voted unanimously to recommend to City Council that the Housing and Community Development Conference Room be named for Ann Michalski. The Commission voted to form a committee to develop a plan for naming the conference room. Committee members included Commission Chair Rick Baumhover, Commission Member Sr. Dorothy Schwendinger, and staff person Jerelyn O'Connor. The Committee finalized the wording for the dedication plaque which was approved by the Housing Commission. Attached is a copy of the dedication plaque. It is our intent that there will be a dedication ceremony at a later date. Thank you for your consideration of this request. The Housing Commission feels that naming the Conference Room for Ann Michalski is an appropriate way to honor Ann's significant contributions to the Dubuque Community.
