AMERICAN DB&T VI 1 NI. TRUST 4 RISING STARS CORI BURBACH BY PAMELA BRANDT Cori Burbach was the first municipal sustainability coor- dinator in Iowa. Her work ensures the local community's ability to meet the environmental, economic and social equity needs of today and future generations. "I tell people I wear two hats," Burbach said. "One is internal, so I work with all of our City departments, whether it's some- thing like the Bee Branch, or new policy, to incorporate sustainability. And the other hat is a community liaison, so that could mean working with businesses on new solar arrays, or it could mean doing a presentation at the elementary schools on sustainability." Burbach assists City departments in providing equitable access to services. "Whether it's housing programs or who's participating in our Leisure Ser- vices programs, we're making sure that we have good community represen- tation, offering services that meet the needs of all residents:' Burbach grew up on a farm in rural Dyersville, Iowa. She earned a bachelor's in public administration from the Uni- versity of Northern Iowa, and a master's in public administration from the Uni- versity of Delaware. She is on the advisory boards for the UW -Platteville Sustainable and Renew- able Energy Systems program, and for the University of Iowa Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research. She participates as a committee mem- ber in the Urban Sustainability Directors Network and the International City and County Management Association. Her community involvement has included partnering with grassroots organizations and students to raise awareness about the harm caused by plastic checkout bags. She's also worked to develop public-private partnerships to increase the use of solar technology. At this year's Growing Sustainable Communities Conference, organized in partnership with the Sustainable City Network, Burbach will participate as a panel member and discuss how to talk with others about climate change. She also has leadership roles with the Dubuque Communi- ty Garden Coalition and the Dubuque Community Days of Caring. She is on the board of directors for Creative Adventure Lab and for DuRide, where she volunteers as a driver to provide transportation for seniors. When asked what she thrives on, Burbach said, "Being able to directly improve someone's life. My favorite days of work were the ones I spent muck- ing out basements follow- ing the 2008 Cedar Rapids floods. You could see the physical impact of the work we did at the end of the day, and we were able to provide support to fam- ilies and businesses who hadn't had anyone else show up to support them in months. More than getting their basement cleaned out, they could tell somebody cared about them" She and her husband, Aaron, have two children, ages 6 and 4, who sometimes tag along with her to meetings. Burbach recognizes her family's supportive role: "My extended family constantly reminds me to think about what I'm working on from as many viewpoints as I can. Everyone from my kids, who gladly put on their rain boots to plant a com- munity garden with me, to my husband's late grandfather Carl Burbach, whose business and development voice I still hear in my head in my work, challenge me to do the best I can every day to serve the public through my career" She also gives credit to her col- leagues: "I work with a team of brilliant, passionate, very busy public servants, and to have someone recognize that I'm mak- ing a difference is truly humbling" I RISING STARS Volunteer activities: DuRide board member; Creative Adventure Lab board member; YP Days of Caring steering committee, Andrew Connolly Make A Difference Day steering committee; University of Wisconsin -Platteville Sustainable and Renewable Energy Program advisory committee; Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research advisory committee. Gardening, preserving and cooking with my friends and family. One word to describe me: Growing. So far, in my 30s, I'm just starting to figure out who I am, am fulfilled and happy with the place I'm at, and am so excited to see what comes next. Not being able to be there to raise my kids. And I'm absolutely phobic of mice. If I could advocate for anything, it would be for all of us adults to work together to raise healthy, happy kids, whether that means supporting every parent in being the best parent they can be; providing the nutritional food, parks to play in and education kids need to grow; or simply being a caring adult for our own or someone else's kids.
