Minutes Park & Recreation Commission 12 9 08PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING Tuesday, December 9, 2008 4:30 p.m., in the snack bar, Bunker Hill Golf Course PRESENT: Chuck Duggan, Paul Hoffmann, Karen Lyness, Evelyn Nadeau and Mark Noble ABSENT: Tom Blocklinger and Gary Harjehausen Staff present: Gil Spence, Pat Prevenas, Bob Fritsch and Eileen Trimble MINUTES It was moved by Hoffmann, seconded by Nadeau, to approve the minutes of the APPROVED; November 12, 2008, meeting. The motion passed unanimously. VOTE SUPPORT Leisure Services Manager Gil Spence explained that the City is working with the GRANT Mines of Spain and the County Conservation Board to establish a water trail APPLICATION TO along the Mississippi River. The idea is a trail for paddle boaters (canoes, ESTABLISH kayaks, et cetera). This Iowa Department of Natural Resource grant program WATER TRAIL would provide $8,000 which would be used mostly for signage along the river, ALONG RIVER; and also printing maps and fliers, et cetera. The City would be the main sponsor VOTE: of the grant. Commissioner Nadeau asked what the ongoing expense would be after the initial funding, and Manager Spence said it should not be too much. It was moved ~ Hoffmann, seconded ~ Noble, to su ort the grant application to establish a water trail alon the Mississi i River. The motion ap ssed unanimously. APPROVE FEE Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas told commissioners that the $60 INCREASE FOR entry for this year's alumni tournament was approved in last year's budget ALUMNI process. We just found out we lost the sponsor we had for the last few years, BASKETBALL which was a $750 loss. We would like to raise the entry fee from $60 to $68 to TOURNAMENT; cover part of that loss; the tournament would still run at a loss. We are looking VOTE: for a new sponsor but don't want to hold up getting information out to teams so we need to decide on the fee now. Commissioner Duggan asked if we could put some kind of note on the information being sent out that we are looking for a new sponsor; Mr. Prevenas said we would add that note. It was moved ~ Nadeau, seconded ~ Hoffmann, to approve the ~ fee increase for the alumni tournament, from 60 to 68. The motion ap ssed unanimously. continued December 9, 2008 meeting page two PARK DIVISION Park Division Manager Bob Fritsch updated commissioners: REPORT: • Crews have all been working on snow removal all day; will take several days to get all our locations taken care of. • Central High School students are helping to repair picnic tables; • we are getting ready for ice rinks; • Fred Becker made a limestone bench to go at newly renovated Eagle Point Park tennis courts; • Hillcrest has had a good start to lights display at Murphy Park; • getting ready to seed flowers; • There was abreak-in at the Ertl building (tree crew) on Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend -the computer system, 8 saws and ahand-held radio were all stolen. They crawled in through a galvanized metal exhaust fan. RECREATION Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas updated commissioners: DIVISION REPORT: • Mr. Prevenas passed around a golf data sheet that shows figures tracked nationally. Bunker Hill Golf Course is down about 1.5% from last season but Iowa and other states around us are worse. • Therapeutic dance was held last Thursday with 46 participants -considering not holding this particular dance in December next year because of low participation both last year and this year; • pool concession bids are out and due back January 7th; • winter/spring brochure is at the printer now and will be available January 2nd; • had budget hearing with the City Manager and everything went well ADJOURN; It was moved by Hoffmann, seconded by Duggan, that the meeting be adjourned VOTE: at 5:05 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
