The Commission meeting convened at 4:33 p.m. in the Manager's Office at Five Flags
Center. Chairperson Cynthia Fuller presided.
Gary Dolphin moved to approve the May 20, 2002 Five Flags Commission Minutes,
seconded by Rod Bakke. Minutes were approved.
Manager Wolfe introduced the commission to Gall McMahon, the new secretary.
During the Manager's Report, Manager Wolfe reported that the month of May featured
large assembly events, including Loras College baccalaureate and graduation and
NICC's graduation.
Full-time staff attended three days of workshops at Four Mounds May 22- 24 for the
purpose of team building. Jim Healy of KSF Associates, Inc., an organizational
consulting firm based in Cedar Rapids, facilitated the workshops. Gil Spence and Gall
McMahon also attended.
Manager Wolfe announced that Jamie Blum, Events Coordinator, has resigned her
position to accept a position at Clarke College. A search for her replacement will begin
soon. Applicants will be required to take a civil service exam.
The first draft of the feasibility study conducted by CSL has been completed and was
distributed to the commission by Manager Wolfe. A focus group session open to the
public will be held on Monday, June 24 in the Orpheum. CSL will summarize the
information gathered and open the meeting up for discussion. One of the main purposes
of the meeting is for the community to tell us what they would like to see at Five Flags.
Facility users have been invited with the intention of making sure they are understood
and gaining information from them.
Manager Wolfe reported she is currently working on a bddal show and is negotiating
with agents to bring profitable shows to Five Flags. Between the arena and theater,
there are eight major shows scheduled for the upcoming season where Five Flags
Center will be either the co-promotor or the main promoter.
May financials were reviewed. Year to date revenue is down compared to last year,
primarily due to two high school graduations being moved to June this year. There were

many non-revenue events, as Five Flags is being well utilized for City meetings.
Manager Wolfe pointed out that concessions revenue this year were down from last
year as there was a Budweiser refund last year in May, and the bar for the Symphony
Pops Concert did not generate as much revenue this year. Discussion followed on next
year adding a bar to the upper floor or making an announcement that the bar is open
downstairs.
New business items included the distribution of updated job descriptions and updates
on capital improvements. It wes noted that the contractor will move in June 24 to begin
preparation for painting of the arena. Work is to be completed by September 1. Also,
work on the theater facade and roof Will begin soon. The ice activity report will be
distributed at the July meeting.
With the announcement of Jamie Blum's resignation, Rod Bakke proposed a goodwill
motion congratulating her on her many years of excellent service to the Five Flags Civic
Center and wishing her continued success in the future.
Gary Dolphin moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Rod Bakke. There being no
further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:22 p.m.
