Carnegie -Stout Public Library
Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of October 19, 2017
Present: President Patty Poggemiller; Christy Monk, Vice -President, Pat Maddux
Secretary; and Trustees, Robert Armstrong, Rosemary Kramer, and Pam Mullin
Excused: Greg Gorton
• September marked the end of the first quarter of FY 2018 and library
expenditures were on target at 25%. Revenue collected was at 19% of
projections.
• During the first quarter of FY 2018 most use of electronic resources were
stable or decreased. Exceptions were strong growth in the use of Mango
Languages, Newsbank Newspapers (national papers), Reference USA,
and Tutor.com. The Telegraph Herald is the most popular online
database with 24,838 issues viewed during the first quarter. Digital
audiobooks and e -Books increased in use 13% compared to the same
time last year. Board games for check out were introduced in October and
quickly became popular. The collection started with 24 games and they
checked out 53 times in three weeks.
• At 47,663 the number of library card holders equals approximately 83% of
our community's population. Open Access accounts are also in this total,
which is estimated at 14%.
• Patty Poggemiller, Robert Armstrong, and Susan Henricks, met with two
board members and Mike Wright, Director of the Dubuque County Library
District to discuss how the expansion of shared library services is working
to date. The County Library cardholders have taken greater advantage of
the program since its introduction on July 1. No Dubuque cardholders
have requested materials from the County Library to be picked up at
C -SPL. Currently 93% of the use is by County library cardholders, with the
majority placing holds on items and picking them up at C -SPL. About 7%
of Dubuque residents place holds from the Carnegie -Stout collection for
pick-up in Asbury. The Board expressed interest in continuing the
partnership to give us a chance to market to the population on the west
side of town, which had been postponed pending a final decision on how
to best implement a marketing strategy. The two boards agreed to extend
the trial period from six months to a year to realize the full potential of the
service.
■
• The Relations Committee met with a representative of John and Alice
Butler and two Board members of the Dubuque Museum of Art who
presented an offer to purchase the Library's two Grant Wood paintings for
$4 million. The Board will take action at their meeting on November 16.
• The Board approved the purchase of a generator with alternates that may
be required for the most effective and efficient performance, not to exceed
$11,000 over the base bid of $107,000.
• The Board discussed the advantages and disadvantages of hiring a part-
time marketing coordinator versus a marketing company to achieve goals
set in a marketing plan at the beginning of the year. The Board approved
contracting with Red Rokk Marketing.
