Dear Terry:
Last Friday, much to our surprise, the street which the citizens have paid so heavily to open,
was once again closed, by 8:00 in the morning. From approximately that time through the day, a beer
van was stationed nearly directly in front of our office. (At one point, two beer trucks drove up onto
the sidewalk -- apparently to stock the van.) We understand the need from some preparation time for
such events as the Jazz Fest just held, but we were not only surprised but dismayed that that
preparation time meant an entire day. While obviously some people were focusing solely on the Jazz
Fest, we here were trying to focus on our practice, and it was increasingly difficult to do so, with a beer
stand parked directly in front of our office. Further, by the time I left the office it was virtually
impossible for me to get out our front doors. People were literally plastered against our front doors and
front windows. That entrance way this morning was littered with cigarette butts, stained and smelling
of stale beer. In short, while we would prefer not to be the proverbial "party pooper", we ask that in
the furore, more consideration be taken of the businesses in place, trying to function despite these
events. Perhaps if the street is to be a playground, it should be limited to weekends, rather than work
days? Certainly, at the very least, it could be expected that the people who are benefitting from these
events might also be charged with returning the area to the condition in which it was found.
Thank you.
Very truly yours,
HAMMER, SIMON & JENSEN
