Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of November 16, 2017
Present: President, Patty Poggemiller; Christy Monk, Vice-President, Pat
Maddux Secretary; and Trustees, Robert Armstrong, Greg Gorton, Rosemary
Kramer, and Pam Mullin
• Library use reflected ups and downs during October. Check-outs of
children's materials decreased 4% but those cataloged as adult increased
by 3%. Downloadable materials increased in check outs by 13%
compared to October last year.
• The Board approved expenditures accrued since the last meeting.
• The marketing firm Red Rokk will begin work in January, 2018. They will
start with an on-site visit. The campaign is expected to launch in March
and the focus is on social media.
• Klauer Construction was awarded the contract to install a generator that
will serve as a back-up to keep operations going during power outages.
• Repair of the decorative limestone underhang from the roof was
highlighted as a need for a CIP project in the coming fiscal year.
• The Board reviewed a proposal to purchase the Grant Wood paintings by
Mr. and Mrs. John Butler. They proposed to buy them for $4 million, hold
them for a year to take advantage of taxes and then donate the paintings
to the Dubuque Museum of Art. The paintings are valued at $22
million. The board voted to decline the purchase.
