Proclamation Hunger & Homelessn
WHEREAS, over 600 men, women and children are homeless within a year in Dubuque
and this is a devastating experience. No person should be stigmatized,
discriminated against or isolated because they are hungry or homeless, and
WHEREAS, over 75 local organizations and agencies compassionately respond to the
needs of those experiencing hunger and homelessness with food, clothing,
shelter, services and permanent housing; and
WHEREAS, Dubuque joins over 500 communities observing the week of November 17-
23, 2002 as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. In recognition of
this the following events are being planned here:
Saturday, November 16, 2002, Project Concern, along with Clarke and
Loras College Social Work Students will hold a winter clothing drive in the
Eagles parking lot on JFK from 10 to 2.
Sunday, November 17, 2002 the Dubuque Rescue Mission will hold a
prayer service at 3:00 P.M. at their facility.
Tuesday, November 19, 2002, the Maria House is hosting a homeless
awareness and fundraising event called “Trading Places.” Participants
will be involved in a “reality experience” of the homeless, seeing the world
from that perspective and at the same time familiarizing themselves with
the available social services network.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 17-23 AS:
“HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND URGE OUR CITIZENS TO BE AWARE AND
RESPONSIVE TO THE DEVASTATION FACED BY THE HOMELESS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
