Historical Soc Granite PaversMEMORANDUM October 22, 2002 TO:The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members FROM:Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT:Request for use of granite pavers The Dubuque County Historical Society has requested the reuse of a portion of the historic granite pavers that were salvaged by the City several years ago. City staff has been working to palletize and store these pavers, along with brick pavers, for reuse on City projects. Currently there are two City projects for which the granite pavers will be used: around the monument/fountain sign at the new education and conference center and in a rest area for the future Pyatigorsk Park as part of our sister city relationship. Sufficient granite pavers exist to use on these City projects as well as meeting the request of the Dubuque County Historical Society. As a condition for reuse, the Historical Society has agreed to place a plaque near the depot indicating the historic source of the granite pavers. I respectfully request Mayor and City Council approval of this request. Michael C. These pavers were!traditionally used at railroad depots around the country. The Dubuque County Historical Society would like to integrate some 0f these stockpiled pavers into the depot restoration project that is currently underway. The use of these pavers will provide yet another educational/cultural opportunity as a part of the America's River Project. It will also enhance the design and provide an environmentally conscious use of recycled material. On behalf of the sponsors of this joint project, we request the donatio~ ~ of this material to the project. Sincerely, Kevin J.
