MINUTES OF MEETING
MECHANICAL BOARD
DATE: Wednesday March 18, 2009
TIME: 4:00 P.M.
PLACE: Conference Room A, City Hall, Dubuque, IA.

Meeting called to order by Tom Giese at 4:02 P.M.
Motion was made to dispense with the reading of last meetings minutes by Mike Kelly seconded
by Jack Papin.
Corey Valaskey and Dave Grothe were sworn in as new board members.
Tom Giese was nominated for chairman of the Mechanical Board for another year. Motion was
made by Gary Hillard seconded by Dave Grothe.
Discussion was held about the installation of a conveyor pizza oven under a type II hood at
Jumpin’ Janes 2055 Holiday drive. The owners explained to the board members that the amount
of pizzas being cooked would be approximately. 1-2 an hour and that would account for only 30%
of their business. They also stated that all of their ingredients were pre –cooked.
A Motion was made by Gary Hillard and seconded by Dave Grothe to allow the installation of a
Type II hood over a conveyor pizza oven at Jumpin’ Janes 2055 Holiday Drive. Motion passed 4
yea 0 nay. 2 abstained from voting, Jack Papin and Tom Giese.
A discussion was held on the sealing of ductwork as addressed in the 2006 International
Mechanical Code and the International Energy Code. Thomas Reed stated that the issue of a
local contractor only sealing the corners on Low Pressure duct was resolved and the contractor
stated he would start sealing the entire joint. Several Board members stated that they thought the
issue was very clear that the entire transverse joint had to be sealed. Also the exception on low
pressure duct for the longitudinal joints not having to be sealed if they were a locking joint was
discussed. A question brought up by Corey Valasky on what the Code was recognizing as a
locking joint. Thomas Reed stated he was excepting any type of locking joint, Pittsburgh, Snap,
etc. Dave Grothe also discussed how canvas connections (flexible) were being sealed since the
corners were usually stapled? Thomas Reed stated he would have to check on that installation.
The Board members asked that the minutes of the previous meeting be sent out with the next
meetings agenda. The secretary stated he would tell the permit clerk.
Motion to adjourn by Dave Grothe seconded by Gary Hilliard. Meting adjourned at 5:05 P.M.
