EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS COMMISSION: This is the third year that I have served as Program Director for the AmeriCorps Partners in Learning Program in Dubuque. Previously, for two years, I was the Public Education Coordinator for the Iowa Citizen Foster Care Review Board. My past work experience includes ten years at Loras College in the Student Life and Campus Ministry Offices. I have served on numerous committees: Dubuque: Everyone's Neighborhood, Education Committee; Faces and Voices Program Committee; Dubuque Community Action Academy; COPC Committee in preparation for HUD grant; Martin Luther King Planning Committee (providing yearly workshops to Dubuque Comm~mity School students along with AmeriCorps Members on diversity, mutticulturalism); Shalom Programming Committee; and Facilitator for Dubuque Board #3 Iowa Foster Care Review Board. I have also received training in the following: State of Iowa Disability Awareness Training; Conflict Management and Crisis Intervention Training; Advocate of and minigtry to persons with disabilities; and Personality Assessment. I hold a BA in Psychology from Loras College. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD? My life experience and exposure to people has been an ongoing educational process. As AmeriCorps program director, I interact daily with Members of diverse race and culture, persons with disabilities and at-risk students. I believe that this diversity provides an invaluable richness within the Dubuque community. However, many experience tmpleasant situations because they are viewed "as different." I want to serve on the Commission to advocate for those who have been victim~ of illegal discrimination while also working for justice and human rights. Another reason for wanting to serve on the Commission is to ensure that we welcome and retain newcomers in our community. This would help promote the educational experience of cultural and social awareness in Dubuque. To further this goal, I would like to help the Commission continue with their role of outreach and educational activities. In addition to being welcoming to new citizens, I feel it is important to continue to reach out to lifelong residents who are not receiving the "quality of life" due to them. It would be my hope that, through the work and advocacy of the Commission, all receive equal oppommities in housing, the workplace and public accommodations CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA BOARD/COMMISSION APPLICATION FORM serving on Boards and Commissions play an important role in advising the Council on matters of interest to our community and its future.
