Minutes Five Flags 8 19 02Five Flags Commission Meeting August 19, 2002 PRESENT: Rod Bakke, Mike Brannon, Mark Nauman ABSENT: Gary Dolphin, Cindy Fuller STAFF PRESENT: Gall McMahon, Gil Spence, Paula Wolfe The Commission meeting convened at 4:50 p.m. in the Manager's Office at Five Flags Center. Chairperson Mark Nauman presided. Rod Bakke moved to approve the July 22, 2002 Five Flags Commission Minutes, seconded by Mike Brannon. Minutes were approved. Rod Bakke moved to approve the July 30, 2002 Five Flags Commission Minutes, seconded by Mike Brannon. Minutes were approved. Manager Wolfe reported there was a Iow level of rental activity during the month of July due to arena painting. Focus for the month was on building maintenance, staff training, and event planning. Manager Wolfe reported that she has been working on marketing and getting the ticket office open. Also, the event contract has been updated to reflect insurance requirement updates. Tickets for the Collin Raye concert on September 27 are currently on sale. Tickets will go on sale Friday, August 23 for Rodney Carrington, a currently popular comedian. The making of ice will begin a little eadier this year; the day after the Irish Feis, a regional Irish dance competition being held on September 7. Staff has been working hard on hiring, as a newspaper ad was run in the Telegraph Herald and the response was very good. Response for the Events Coordinator has also been very good. To date, 51 applicants have returned the Civil Service exam. The exams will now be graded. July financial information was reviewed, showing a Iow income due to the closing of the arena for painting. Old Business included the staffing of a building attendant when the arena is being used during non-business hours. City Manager Mike Van Milligen has approved that the cost of the building attendant come from the savings of the vacant Events Coordinator position, therefore there will be no additional cost charged to facility users. Ushers have been very responsive to filling the times where a building attendant is needed. New Business. The Commission reviewed the pdcing survey conducted by concessions manager John Snider and his recommendations for pdce increases. Rod Bakke moved to accept John Snider's pricing recommendations, with a 16 oz. beer priced at $3.25. It was seconded by Mike Brannon and approved by all. Five Flags Commission Meeting August19,2002 Page 2 The commission reviewed the Thunderbirds contract which had been discussed with, and verbally approved by David Field, Thunderbirds investor. The charge per game will be reduced from $600 to $500. The Thunderbirds may want to use two volunteers to take tickets at the games instead of using Five Flags staff to save on staffing costs. Mike Brannon moved to approve the Thunderbirds contract as presented. It was seconded by Rod Bakke and approved by all. The contract will also go before the City Council for their approval.
