Minutes Five Flags 11 18 02Five Flags Commission Meeting
November 18, 2002
PRESENT: Rod Bakke, Mike Brannon, Cindy Fuller, Mark Nauman
ABSENT: Gary Dolphin
STAFF PRESENT: Gall McMahon, Gil Spence, Paula Wolfe
The Commission meeting convened at 4:33 p.m~ in the Manager's Office at Five Flags
Center. Chairperson Mark Nauman presided.
Mike Brannon moved to approve the October 21, 2002 Five Flags Commission Minutes,
seconded by Rod Bakke. Minutes were approved by all.
Manager Wolfe reported that October was a great month, featuring a big vadety of
events. We have reached a sold-out status for Red Green Live scheduled for November
30. Many events have been happening in the theater and on ice. Staff has been getting
ready for a busy month of November.
October finandals were reviewed. Year to date revenue is down from prior year. This
reflects an adjustment of revenue from October to September. Non-revenue events are
consistent with the many City meetings being held at Five Flags.
Concessions revenue reflects that Rodney Carrington and the Catlahan Craft Show did
very well. Thunderbirds concessions have done well due to a higher number of home
games. In comparison to last year, concessions are up $10,000. That helps to make up
for a lower revenue margin. Concession caps (amount spent per person) have been
consistent. Paula reported that at the October commission meeting it appeared that the
September Learn-to-Skate concessions revenue was Iow, but that was due to only one
night of the four Learn-to-Skate sessions being held in September. It was suggested
that the concession stand be opened for youth hockey practices. This has been tried in
the past, and found to be unprofitable.
Revenue was good for all events, with the exception of the Tamburitzans, which
experienced a loss. The loss is not reflected in revenue, as it is reflected in expenses. A
self-promotion report for the Tamburitzans was given to commission members for their
review. The George Carden Circus presented two shows November 7, with attendance
down about 200 per show from last year.
Discussion continued about the sale of pizza at hockey games. Thirteen pizzas are
brought in at the beginning of each game, with sales going well. Pizza delivery has been
slow at times, causing concessions to occasionally run out despite eady placement of
orders. Signage will be placed at each concession stand to direct patrons to the pizza
concession stand. Ideas for selling extra pizzas at end of each game were discussed.
Manager Wolfe distributed and reviewed self-promotion reports for Tamburitzans and
Dracula. Sales for The Nutcracker are going well, with promotion for it underway. Sales
for three shows of Sesame Street Street Live, a co-promotion for Five Flags, have been

strong. Manager Wolfe reported that ice usage wes cancelled today due to ZambOni
repairs. Gil Spence told the commission that a new ice resurfacer is in the FY04 budget
which begins July 1, 2003.
There was no old business.
New Business. Discussion continued about the feasibility of hanging towel hooks
between the showers and the dressing area in the locker rooms. Staff will look into this.
Gil Spence presented the proposed operating budget. After much discussion Rod
Bakke moved to accept the operating budget as presented. It was seconded by Cindy
Fuller and approved by all. Gil will present the operating budget to the City Manager at a
meeting later in the week. Following the meeting he will send a memo to the
commission, letting them know if the City Manager recommended any changes to the
budget.
There being no further business, Cindy Fuller moved to adjourn the meeting. It was
second by Rod Bakke and approved by all. The meeting adjourned at 5:46 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Nauman
