Stevens Re: Appointment to the Civil Service Board I have been informed that there might be another opening on the Civil Service Board again this year. In order to provide more detailed information regarding my application for this position I am enclosing a copy of my resume' for your information. Presently I am involved with two organizations, the Hoffmann Development Center and Area Residential Care as a member of their operational boards. I serve as Treasurer for the Hoffmann Board of Directors. Meetings of each of these boards are scheduled once a month. The reasoning behind my application for appointment to the Civil Service Board is that I've spent my adult life in the service of my city and my country, as a police officer for the City of Dubuque, and also as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve. During both of these periods it became clear to me that the quality of service to citizens begins at the initial application and certification level. Citizens are entitled to expect the best from the employees that serve them. From that perspective the testing and certification of the best applicants is essential to that goal. It is my understanding that the Civil Service Board supervises the testing and certification process that can accomplish this goal. In addition, this board also provides testing and certification for the appointment of supervisory positions within each department. This is another area that can result in a high level of quality of service to each department and to the community, and another reason that I would like to become involved in this process. I appreciate your consideration of my application. When I first joined the Library board, I had no idea that a capital campaign/renovation was ready to begin, and I've not had a chance to serve during a time of "normalcy." I would very much appreciate having a chance to do that. Thank you for your consideration. List two reference with names and addresses:: Douglas J. In addition, I have experience working in a small public library (East Dubuque Public Library) and a specialized library (Southwest Health Medical Library) which would give me an insight into the operations of a library. I've completed an internship with the library system at Ion State University, as part of my program there. Also, I have direct amrketing/sales experience with books/music/ect. through my employment at Borders, Inc. What contributions can you make or state reason for applying?: I have a strong affliction with libraries and believe knowledge is power. However,I am aware as economic times harden the library must make some hard decisions. It is clear a library is much more than its building and must support its community as well.
