Proclamation_Iowa Private Colleges Week
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Dubuque, a city of colleges, is the only city in Iowa that has three private, four-year colleges
or universities, Together, Clarke College, Loras College, and the University of Dubuque
create an economic impact of $400 million annually on the local economy, and employment
among the three schools is comprised of over 1,000 full-time employees; and
WHEREAS, the three schools will host a combined total of more than 500 prospective high school
juniors and seniors and their families this week during Iowa Private College Week to
showcase what their campuses and the City of Dubuque have to offer; and
WHEREAS, Clarke, Loras, and the University of Dubuque all provide a significant number of arts and
cultural events on- and off-campus which greatly contribute to the quality of life in Dubuque;
and
WHEREAS, students at all three private schools in Dubuque contributed over 50,000 hours of service to
the Dubuque Community through service projects, resulting in each being named to the
National President’s Honor Roll for Service; and
WHEREAS, enrollment at the three private schools combined is in excess of 4,300 students coming
from across Iowa, the region, the nation and around the world. Clarke, Loras, and the
University of Dubuque enroll students from over 50 foreign countries who come to Dubuque
each year; and
WHEREAS, Clarke, Loras, and the University of Dubuque contribute a significant benefit to workforce
development by providing over 1,500 internship opportunities annually and furnishing
employers with excellent employees.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF
THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF
AUGUST 3-8, 2009, AS
“IOWA PRIVATE COLLEGE WEEK”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Great Seal of the City of Dubuque to
be affixed this 3rd day of August, 2009.
