Proclamation_Responsible Gaming Week 2009
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the gaming entertainment industry is an important part of our community,
improving our overall economy and quality of life by employing more than
1090 people and paying more than $34 million in payroll and benefits in
2008, distributing more than $1.7 million to local charities and
organizations, and more than $27 million in taxes annually; and
WHEREAS, partnerships are the name of the “game” in Dubuque, Diamond Jo Casino
and Mystique Casino have joined together in a cooperative marketing effort
called “Playdubuque.com” which will attract even more visitors to
Dubuque casinos and businesses and;
WHEREAS, the overwhelming majority of casino customers enjoy gaming for its
entertainmentand recreational value and do so responsibly; however
WHEREAS, the commercial casino entertainment industry has devoted significant
effort and resources to the promotion and practice of responsible gaming,
including establishing the National Center for Responsible Gaming to fund
research into disordered gambling and youth gambling and funding 1-800-
BETS-OFF; and
WHEREAS, the commercial entertainment industry has designated August 3-7, 2009, as
Responsible Gaming Education Week in order to raise awareness of this
important issue.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON
BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY
PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF AUGUST 3-7, 2009, AS:
“RESPONSIBLE GAMING EDUCATION WEEK”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN ME IN
EXPRESSING GREAT APPRECIATION TO MYSTIQUE CASINO, AND DIAMOND JO
CASINO FOR SERVING AS AN ANCHOR FOR LOCAL TOURISM EFFORTS, MAKING
SUBSTANTIAL CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRI-STATE AREA, AND
HELPING TO LESSON THE BURDEN OF CITY GOVERNMENT BY PROVIDING
ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set
my hand and caused the Great Sealof the
City of Dubuque, Iowa, to be affixed this 3rd
