Narrative Description: This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1847? 1856, Greek Revival, returned eaves on gable end, returned eaves, centered entrance with sidelights and transom, paired chimneys set inside of end wall which is very unusual, flat roofed two-story portico with paneled square- cut columns is likely original to the design and surely is older than date indicated. Physical Description: Two-story brick L-plan with side-gable wing extension on east end, plainly executed with plain sills/lintels set flush with the wall plane, corner 8x13 porch and centered 8x25 porch on north side of plan. Stone foundation. Core measures 77' on long side, 38 wide on front by 34 deep, rear wing 43x25. Stone foundation. Alterations: Porches with columns are of later date (c.1910). Permits note re-roofings in 1937, 1956 and 1997, with roof repair in 1942. Landscaping/Setting: House is reversed relative to Alpine (street didn't exist when house was built), raised terrace setting in back, driveway north of house. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Solon Langworthy, built this house and his daughter, Mrs. Mary Bunting, was the last family member to occupy it until c.1933. The building was converted into apartments between 1933 and 19459 (uncited newspaper clipping, date stamped September 15, 1946, Historic Homes File, F-2, Center For Dubuque History). Solon Langworthy is credited with the following area building efforts: [i]two-story brick residence with two-story wing, 2_x34, $3,000 (Herald, November 24, 1872). [i]two story addition, 44x24, $2,500 (ibid., November 23, 1872). [i]Lookout house, $6,000 (ibid., December 14, 1877). [i]lmprovements, $450 (ibid., December 31, 1882). [i]brick dwelling, $3,000 (ibid., December 20, 1883). Building History: visible on 1872 and 1889 birds eye views. No sewer data found. A 1970 photo identifies as the "old Langworthy home." 9.
