7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1945-46, this was an addition
to the West 3rd octagon, it is not of recent date as is indicated on site form, being extant as of 1950,
matches same. Not present when HABS documented the house c.1935.
Physical Description: Single-story brick with rectangular plan and hip or flat roof, concrete foundation
and tuck-under garage. Angled end wall, core measures 24x44. Concrete foundation.
Alterations: Permits note conversion into apartments in 1931 ($300).
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: John G. and Rose Chalmers, were the first listed residents in 1948. He was a
district court judge and they were related to the Langworthy/Chalmers family who resided in the
Octagon house. The original cost was $12,000.
Building History: The sewer tap dates to May 9, 1905. 320 Alpine was built as an attachment to 1095
W. 3rd for Judge John G. Chalmers and his wife Rose. They moved out of 1095 W. 3rd so the next
generation, the Edward Langworthy Chalmers family could move in. The Judge's home was attached
to 1095 W. 3rd because building materials were scarce right after WWII and new home construction was
restricted. The Chalmers' originally wished to build on an adjacent lot but those restrictions disallowed
building a separate building (owner information).
