7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. Style/Year: c. 1907-08, Colonial Revival
style, presents two fronts to north and east, two-column full-height temple front, rounded oriole side
entry, hip roof with dormers. This is one of the largest concrete house plans in the city, if Chris Voelker
built it then this is the high end of his work in house building. The present owner correctly notes that
this design was far beyond Voelker’s known design range and that it apparently represents the use of
his or a similar Peer-Amid concrete block by a different designer-builder.
Physical Description: Concrete block construction, basic rectangular (43x37) footprint, front terraces
(each 9x11) flank concrete block balustrade (9x15), interior pool. Front windows have unusual three-
part divides and these match those on 1110 Langworthy to west. Rusticated stone foundation, plain
water table, plain concrete lintels and projecting plain sills. East wing measures 10x6, west bay 3x12.
Rear porch measures 10x37. Stone foundation.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1971 (removal of slate roof), 1993, alterations in 1938 ($300),
balustrade replacement in 1980, replacing a two-story rear porch in 1992 ($450), rebuilding a chimney
in 1993, building a 23x28 garage in 1994.
Landscaping/Setting: Matching garage on south end of lot, cast iron fence. Drive to east, garage with
Palladian window in gable front at southeast corner.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Joseph C. and Emma H. Garland were the first listed residents 1908. He was
an agent for the North-western Mutual Life Insurance Co. They were here post-1921.
Building History: The sewer tap is dated c.1913.
