Collier House Name of Property 1084 West Third Address Dubuque County Dubuque City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1868/72, Italianate style brick design (paired brackets, oculus attic lights, 2/2 windows, square cut bay with rounded windows, door with sidelights, transom. Designer/Builder: John Keenan, architect. Physical Description: irregular two-story plan (rectangular core 30x29, with front wing 6x18, side wing 6'6"x19, rear wing 34x16) with front and side gable roof wings, offset rear gable roof wing. Raised stone foundation, stone side walls on front steps, rounded stone lintels with flattened keystone, doubled for front double window set, unusual hip roof bay, entrance on side with frame vestibule (multi-pane side lights and transom, not original) on same, wrap-around porch (22' frontage, 34' depth) with round columns on stone piers (c.191 0) shutters, stone sills. Alterations: very well preserved, porch as noted. Permits note re-roofings in 1932, 1960, 1973 (part), 1987, 1990, 1992, 1995, garage roof 1962. The original house did not have the wing to the east (the dining room), which was the first addition and quite early. The room over the dining room plus the wing to the back, the second addition, was built in 1927 or so. Landscaping/Setting: curved walk in front of house. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Robert H. Collier, (Susan A. Campbell's great-grandfather) two story brick residence with all modern improvements, 28x40 core, 28x30 wing, $6,000, opposite Langworthy on 3rd near the head of Alpine, Herald, November 24, 1872, Times, November 23, 1872 reports as valued at $3,500. Herald says 28x30 with 16x18 wing, cost $5,000, on "3rd Street near Solon Langworthy's residence." Susan Campbell, owner, was told it was built in 1873. Following directory entries found: [;]1867, Collier lives in hotel. [;]1868, R. H. Collier, South side 3rd at foot of Alpine, Laflin & Rand. [;]1873-74, R. H. Collier, 3rd, south side two east of Alpine, manager Western Dept. Laflin & Rand Powder Co. [;]1874, Robert H. Collier, same as 1875. [;]1875, James F. Collier, wholesale dealer in wood and coal (as 606). Robert H., manger Dubuque branch, Laflin & Rand. [;]1877, J. C. Collier Building History: visible on 1889, 1872 birds eye views. Martha McDonald here 1921. No sewer data found. The house outline is sketched on a c.1895 sewer map but no family name is given. Then the McDonald "Aunties," Miss Mame and Miss Martha, lived here until my mother, Helen Collier Altman, and father, Franc K. Altman, moved in in 1922. My grandfather, J.C. Collier, who later built the house next door at 1072 West Third was brought up at 1084 West Third. (I, Suzanne A. Campbell, was brought up here and lived at 1084 West Third until I grew up and left Dubuque.) 9.
