7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Langworthy Historic District. StyleNear: 1896, Colonial Revival/Queen
Anne (Sommer said Romanesque), former is embodied in the Palladian window sets in the gable
fronts, the Doric paired porch columns, the Colonial frieze infill on the porch pediment and the frieze of
swags that tops the tower. The Romanesque is represented in the unusual battered stone porch piers.
Physical Description: Two-story asymmetrical core (53x23) with hip roof, shallow south side
pavilion/wing with pedimented gable cap, east-facing three-sided bay with pedimented gable cap, and a
splendid round corner tower with tall turret roof. A wrap-around porch covers the fayade (39' frontage,
22' depth) and the tower base. Broad rusticated dark stone lintels and beltcourses enrich the brick
exterior. Stone foundation and battered ashlar stone porch piers. Multi-vertical pane windows fill the
attic level of the tower. Red brick and sandstone.
Alterations: Permits note re-roofings in 1938, 1980, porch repair 1974, 1977. Assessor notes changed
back to single-family dwelling 1960.
Landscaping/Setting: large lot is higher on the west end, house fronts to south. Driveway at east end of
parcel.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Cyril Gregorie, son of Charles H. Gregorie (French settler and early ferry
operator), built this house and was a successful local funeral house operator, serving as president of
the Iowa Funeral Directors Association at one time. His wife was Zoe Marie Rosier.
Original Owner/Builder: Cyrus Gregorie, built "an elegant modern new residence" on "West 3rd near
Langworthy's," was making arrangements to start the work in May 1896, projected cost $7,500 (Herald,
May 24, 1896).
Building History: Gregorie is listed here as of 1899, he was an undertaker with Gregorie Bros. There is
no 1896 address listing. The house was duplexed during the 1930s. Eric and Diane Schulz purchased
it in 1971 and restored the house, returning it to single family use (1993 Old House Enthusiasts House
Tour). The sewer tap dates to December 1934. The house outline is sketched on a c.1895 sewer map
and is labled Gregorie.
