Fairbanks House Name of Property 480 Arlinqton Address Dubuque County Dubuque City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1875, Italianate style gable front side hall design. Designer/Builder:W. J. Woods, builder. Physical Description: two-story brick rectangular plan (43x23'6" with centered 12x5 side wings) with raised stone foundation, water table, and east and west side bays. There is an oculus window on the stairway landing (west front). Stone lintels are rounded with flattened ends and windows are 2/2 lights. The bays are three-sided frame extensions from square cut wings and both have been sided with aluminum siding. The porch (6'6"x23) is c.1910 Neo Classical with rusticated concrete block piers and tapered square pillars. The entry is on the right front and is a double door entry with transom. There is a southeast corner side porch (25'6"x10) and a rear porch (10x28'6'). Alterations: porch as noted. Permits note re-roofings in 1961, 1990 (cedar shakes), remodeling of porch into garage 1932, front porch repair, 1986, deck on second floor sunroom, 1991, 24x26 frame attached garage and three decks in 1991 ($7,388). Substantially restored since 1986. Landscaping/Setting: ground level rises to the west, house fronts north, walk and driveway to the west. There is a stone retaining wall to the north that diminishes as it proceeds north. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Joshua E. and Caroline D. Fairbanks. Building History: J. E. Fairbanks built a two story brick dwelling and barn for $6,000 (Herald, October 31, 1875). He owned the parcel when it was sewered in 1890 and when this quarter of the original lot was subdivided in 1874. This property was tapped in August 9, 1904. Fairbanks appears at this address 1875-67, corner Arlington and High, as a cracker maker (J. E. Fairbanks Co.), 1877, 1883 (as 25 Arlington), 1886, 1896 as southeast corner Arlington and Highland Place, 1899, as 25 Arlington. There is no 1873 listing and he appears at 104 Arlington in 1874. 9.
