7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: pre-1872, very
unusual two-story side gable vernacular brick duplex on fully exposed stone foundation.
Physical Description: rectangular plan (22x44, paired outside rear wings 14x13'6"), eaves continue
beyond end walls, chimneys on peaks of end walls, centered gable roof dormer with twin lights, minimal
yet symmetrical fayade fenestration, paired centered doors both on first and basement levels, double
rowlock brick window arches, stone sills, single story brick ell on southwest corner. Rear single-story
wings are offset to the outside of the plan. There are exterior stairs on the east side wall.
Alterations: originally fronted north with walkout porch and walkout basement doors beneath, porch
removed and basement windows sealed, two basement windows (stone lintels) covered, dormer
added. Permits note re-roofings in 1948, 1981 (gutters and soffits removed).
Landscaping/Setting: lone building on this side of street, ground rises rapidly to the south, walkout to
south from ground floor, advanced to sidewalk, fronts north. There is a retaining wall to the south.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: visible on 1872 birds eye view. Mrs. M. A. Cheney lived in 126 Arlington, 1896-99,
and John Alexander lived at 128 those same years. Neither was here in 1890. Assessor, 1971,
addresses as 590 Arlington but is a duplex.
