Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1880s, pre-1889, exceptionally well preserved two-story vernacular/ Italianate style brick side gable duplex (latter embodied in 2/2 lights, unusual broad bracketed stone sills with broad sills and round topped upper sash (these rarely survive in the city, here the entire set does). Physical Description: broad rectangular plan (shallow T-plan, core 46x37'6" with matching rear .6"x16 recesses), centered paired entries and upper centered elongated windows (apparently not former doors as is usually the case given the survival of 2/2 sash in the openings), symmetrical fenestration, stone foundation and water table, a key item of interest are the wrap around window arches, a combination of decorated triangular stone spring stones, ornate coffin-shaped ornamented stone key stones, with two intervening sections of double rowlock brickwork. Two east side chimneys are on end wall roof planes, eaves continue beyond end walls. Rear portion of plan is stepped in behind gables, with broad rear gable roof wing, there are paired and centered single story rear additions (12x18). No porch on house as of 1950, 3'6"x9 porch present 1971. There is a sealed rear east side door Alterations: present porch, front chimneys shortened, east windows sealed, porch gone (major loss since 1986, vacant and deteriorated). Permits note re-roofings in 1942, 1966 (part), 1967 (dormer), 1995. Landscaping/Setting: ground drops abruptly to the north behind duplex, fronts south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Bernard Joseph O'Neill, 179 Arlington, built a $1,000 addition to his half duplex in 1881 (Herald, December 4, 1881).
