7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889, two-story
side gable frame Italianate style duplex (embodied in 2/2 lights, bracketed eaves, east bays, rounded
window hoods).
Physical Description: rectangular plan with raised stone foundation, centered paired single entrances
with transoms, gable roof window hood, symmetrical fenestration, unusual basement-ground floor
three-sided bay on east side wall (matching single story bay on west side), double attic end lights, end
wall roof peak chimneys, two gable roof dormers of varying width on front roof. Two successive two-
story rear wings, with full-length side porch on west side and recessed porch in middle of east side wall,
two attached garages, one to the west, one to the north. Three-sided bay on west sidewall. There is a
west side porch, a west side single-story three-sided bay, a gable roof dormer on the rear wing. T-plan
with two rear wings and a rear two-story porch. Assessor (1971) shows half plan as 57x18 with side
porch recess 4’6” into plan, porch measures 6x30. Side bay measures 9x3, no porch shown.
Alterations: asbestos siding, upper center window on west half sealed off, canopy post-1950 (when no
porch shown), dormers added. Permits as 653-55 note a re-roofing in 1981, new dormer (no date,
$300), re-sided 1951, Prairie Street side porch re-roofed 1993, garage re-sided with lapped siding
1993.
Landscaping/Setting: corner lot drops away to the east and north, fronts south. Stone retaining wall to
the north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: M. M. Walker’s new dwelling on the corner of Prairie and Chestnut was “rapidly
approaching completion” (Herald, September 27, 1877).
Cyril M. Walker (manager W. W. Walker Co. and John M. Fritz (Engler-Frudden Lumber Co.) lived at
147 Chestnut in 1896. S. A. Atherton (Farley & Loetscher) was at 145 Chestnut in 1899.
