7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1870/1890+/-
(Assessor), Italianate style two-story brick gable front side hall plan residence type (style embodied in
elongated narrow windows-note that the two frame buildings to the immediate east have the same
windows).
Designer/Builder: M. Kingman
Physical Description: raised stone foundation and water table, left hand entry with sidelights but no
transom, apparent metal lintels and sills, symmetrical fenestration. Two-story rear wing offset to the
east. Core measures 28x24 with offset rear wing 14x14. Assessor, 1971, shows full-width front porch
removed.
Alterations: door surround, removal of full-width front porch (present 1950), vertical siding on façade.
No permit data (see 655 typo?).
Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel, front terrace, frame carriage house on back of lot (1.5 story side
gable with through cornice dormer loft, side doors). Assessor, 1971, reports garage with loft, 16x20,
and attached shed, 9x11.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: George Meyer, foreman, lived at 148 Chestnut as of 1890-91. Michael and
Mary Melchior also lived at this address, 1890-99. He was a laborer.
Builder Marshall Kingman built a two-story brick residence (21x20) with wing (14x14) on the corner of
Chestnut and Prairie streets for $3,500 (Herald, December 18, 1870). Marshall then lived on the

northwest corner of Bluff and 12 streets.

Nicholas Plattner built a frame barn on Prairie between Chestnut and 11 for $150 in 1871 (Tribune,
December 21, 1871), possibly referring to the carriage house.
Building History: This isn’t a convincing early design particularly when it is linked by association with the
properties to the east. Elements that cast doubt are (1) no clear depiction on either the 1889 or 1872
birds eye views, (2) the apparent rebuilding of the gable front, vertical siding on the front, close cut
eaves and the lack of brackets (3) the recent broken pediment door surround, (4) the strange lintels and
sills. and (5) the strange symmetrical side wall fenestration pattern. Assessor’s card, 1971, reports
collapse of basement floor into a mine shaft, dwelling settling badly.
