Becker House (?) Dubuque Name of Property County 1035 Grove Terrace Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: c.1905/1912 (Assessor), Neo-Classical (Palladian window set in attic front and rear, returned eaves). Craftsman style windows (upper sashes, perimeter border form) Physical Description: two-story frame rectangular plan (32x29) with gable front roof, south (rear) and north (centered) three-sided bays (two 2x12, one 2x8) with pedimented gable roof dormer caps, cutaway corners on the front, these voids being capped with a returned eave, gable roof front porch with side entry, raised stone foundation, had wood water table. North single-story square cut bay and three-ided bay on first floor, two-story rear solarium wing, basement windows on bases of bays, cellar door at northwest corner, three-sided bay on south wall. Porch measures 10x19, rear porch 10x17. Alterations: resided with asbestos siding. Permits note re-roofings in 1945, 1976. Landscaping/Setting: moderate terrace, fronts east, level rear yard and high stone retaining wall to west (Highland). 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Building History: Duplex as of 1971. C. M. Walker owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date and when it was platted in 1897. He was one of four platters of the Grove Terrace Subdivision. Originally numbered 3 South Grove Terrace, W. S. Knott is the first listing at this address, in 1890, he was a trunk and valise manufacturer. In 1896 Mrs. M. E. Knott and Jos. W. Knott were here, along with widow Mary E. (Walter S.) Knott. She owned the house and Joseph boarded (jeweler). In 1899 Mrs. M. E. Knott and W. D. Middlesworth were here. William D. and Alice M. Middlesworth were here 1902- 09, he was a special agent for the Mutual Life Ins. Co. Lovell C. Clay was at 66 South Grove Terrace 1913-15. The house was vacant in 1918 (66), and Henry C. Becker was here, present address, 1921. Unless the house was replaced, it dates to c.1890. The Assessor dates to 1912. 9.
