7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1905, Queen Anne
style (bays, presumed original detailing, gable front dormer).
Physical Description: two-story frame square plan (24x30, front pavilion 3’6”x15”, rear pavilion 3’6”x17,
south bay 4’6”x12, north bay (2x7) with pyramid roof, basic cubic form, with south centered and front
(right side) three-sided bays with gable front dormers. Raised stone foundation with wooden
watertable, narrow clapboard cladding. The back of this plan is addressed as 1050 Highland and
consists of a two-story hip roof wing with second story deck and bridge link to Highland, gable roof
dormer and side dormers, masonite and asbestos siding. Rear gable roof wing projects over a two-
story solarium (14x30). There is a southwest exit and corner porch.
Alterations: southeast corner solarium wing and entry porch, c.1950+ (Sanborn 1909/50 shows original
rounded corner single-story porch). Resided with asbestos siding. Permits note re-roofings in 1941,
1994, 1996, enclosure of side porch of duplex 1962, rear addition 1968 ($3,000), rear deck and bridge
1972, addition and porch enclosure 1987 ($18,882).
Landscaping/Setting: moderate terrace, fronts east, level excavated yard to the west, rear stone
retaining wall (Highland), massive stone wall to south, terrace drops to the north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Richard Kolck built a brick residence for $3,500 in 1905 (Telegraph-Herald,
December 31, 1905).
L. Lindenberg owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date) and when it was platted in 1897. He
was one of four platters of the Grove Terrace Subdivision.
Building History: Earliest listing is for Mrs. Lucretia M. Walker (1899), she remained through 1908,
followed by Wm. Kolck (56 S Grove Terrace) who was here 1909-18, followed by Mrs. Louisa Kolck in
1921. Directory appears to question 1905 date?
