7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1902-03, Neo
Classical style (porch with broken pediment entry, spider web lunette dormer windows, round columns
on second story south balcony).
Physical Description: near identical plan to 1045 Grove Terrace immediately south. Two-story frame
cubic plan (front portion 31x27, rear offset wing 17x21) with high pitched hip roof, front (right side)
narrow three-sided bay (3x9), centered square cut bay on south side (4’5”x12), both with pedimented
gable dormers with shingled fronts. Very narrow clapboard cladding. Porch wraps around southeast
corner(18’ frontage, 19’6” depth). Entry is on the side wall. Raised stone foundation and wooden water
table. Corner boards and heavy modillions beneath front dormer eaves. North side corbelled chimney.
Alterations: very well preserved. Permits note a re-roofing in 1989, concrete garage repairs 1949,
porch rebuilding 1989, front porch railing replacement 2000.
Landscaping/Setting: moderate terrace, fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: Fred Rumpf built a new house on Grove Terrace using architect Thomas
Carkeek in 1902 (Telegraph-Herald, April 6, 1902). That source stated “the building will be modern
throughout and will add greatly to the appearance of the neighborhood in which it will stand.” This is
the only Grove Terrace property that Rumpf owned. Directory listings, however, first list this address in
1918?
Building History: Duplex as of 1971. F. A. Rumpf owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date,
c.1896). He was one of four platters of the Grove Terrace Subdivision. Louis and Ida M. Lindenberg
lived here 1899-1918, as did Mrs. Lindenberg in 1921. He ran a hardware/seed store at 575 Main. The
