Walker House Dubuque Name of Property County 1155 Grove Terrace Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889/1881 (Assessor), Queen Anne style (remarkable roof, dormers, massing, elongated thin windows). Designer/Builder: Franklin D. Hyde, architect (elevation and plans, Dubuque, The Key City of Iowa, 1889). Physical Description: two-story frame house with square core (2.5 stories high), with east and south wings, and a north pavilion. The roof is the important surviving component and it is unmatched in the city for its complexity. The design employs a series of jerkinhead or clipped gables to convey a thatched roof effect. Dormers are tucked under extended overhangs and there is a secondary roof plane beneath the dormer front. The dormer on the south wing has cutaway corners to match the same effect on the corners of the bay below. There is a single story cantilevered (with scrolled brackets) oriole on the east bay ground floor. There is a raised stone foundation and likely a wooden water table. The main entrance is on the east front with transom and separate half sized side lights. There is a single-story porch in the southwest corner and it has a three-sided oriole with narrow lights. North end square cut bay on wing, same dormer pattern. There is a west end solarium wing with deck on the second floor. Plan core (north portion) measures 38x33, with north wing (4x20), two-staged east wing (8x16 overall), and south wing 15x18. West porch measures 16x7’6”. Angled tower measures 9x13, two porches north of tower collectively measure 29x8. Alterations: the 1891 porch covered the east front of the house between the wing and the south corner. The house has been restored, aluminum siding removed, restored paint scheme. Permits note a re- roofing in 1995 ($38,083), re-sided 1977, new front porch 1979, partial re-siding 1979, rear stairs/deck repairs 1980, siding repairs 1991, porch/deck extension 1991 ($6,000). Landscaping/Setting: hillside parcel with high terrace, fronts east. Retaining wall on the frontage with gate and steps, plastic fence on same. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Marshall M. Walker, who lived at 65 Grove Terrace (might be 1045 Grove Terrace) in 1893 (61?) made $1,500 in improvements in 1882 (Herald, December 31, 1882). Apparently this was the start of construction and the house was finished in 1883 at a cost of $9,300 (ibid., December 20, 1883). The same account credits him with a $2,400 foundation that same year. The Times credits him with a 2.5-story frame residence on Grove, costing $9,000 in 1885 (Times, January 20, 1886). Shank dates the house to c.1884 and identifies the architect. Walker owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date, c.1890). Building History: one of five large houses visible on 1889 birds eye view. Pyramid Investments buys 1971, hen seven two and three-room apartments.
