Harger House Dubuque Name of Property County 1207 Grove Terrace Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1854/1880 (Assessor), Gothic Revival style, this was a real stylistic throwback in Dubuque, the style, particularly in this form, having long before disappeared. This denticulated bargeboard treatment is not representative of the 1840-80 style and apparently reflects contemporary design influences in cornice ornamentations. Faithful to the original style are the square cut-wraparound stone lintels. The gable tip finials and the porch trim work is also accurate. The oculus attic lights are not Gothic. Core plan is that of two overlapping rectangles, east one 43x21, projects 11’ north of west one, 45x18, which projects 13’ south from former one. The entry porch measures 8x11, the wrap-around porch has a 30’ depth on each end and a 59’east frontage. Two west bays measure 1x6, 3x10. Designer/Builder: John Rague architect. Physical Description: Two-story side gable brick rectangular plan with through cornice centered front gable roof dormer, flanking gable roof dormers, and a wrap-around verandah/porch. The latter is likely original given its depiction in 1889 and its presence on Sanborn Maps as of 1891. There is a large south end gable end chimney. A smaller rectangular south wing projects from the southwest corner. Raised stone foundation. Northwest corner porch, north side porch, two rear bays on first floor, west end chimney, rear gable roof dormer, oculus lights in attic ends with cross-like mullion pattern. Alterations: very well preserved. Vestibule on main porch might be an addition. Permits note re- roofings in 1970 (as 1205), 1949 (as 1207), 1969 (porch, 1207), 1984 (as 1209), 1996 (1207, $18,400), 1984, porch re-roofed 1969, front porch area enclosed 1981. Landscaping/Setting: stone wall to east, picket fence, yard to west, hillside location, high terrace, fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Benton M. Harger residence (Gephart, p. 85; Sommer, pp. 55-56). P. J. Lee residence as of 1897 (Souvenir Gems). Original Owner/Builder: Present owner states 1854 Herald lists the building with Benton H. Harger (and Mary L.) as builder. The Herald lists Harger as remodeling his residence in 1889, the amount is not legible but is likely $4-6,000 (Herald, December 29, 1889). He owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date, c.1890). Harger lived at 1348 Locust as of 1886-88. He is first listed here in 1890. In 1899 rd he was at 455 West 3. Patrick J. and Mary R. Lee were at 91 Grove Terrace 1902-15, his widow here in 1921. Building History: one of five large houses visible on 1889 birds eye view. The present owner states that it also appears on the 1872 view. There have been just four owners, Harger, Lee and Frank and Phyllis Licciardi (1971) and the present owners, the Mozena family.
